CDT-EI awarded ILM approval

CDT-EI has formally been granted status of an ILM Approved centre. The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) is the largest management Awarding Organisation in the UK, and combines industry-leading qualifications and specialist member services.

As an ILM Approved centre, our CDT offers students the opportunity to gain ILM Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management as part of the 4-year doctoral training programme.

CDT-EI presence at IeMRC final conference

CDT-EI staff and students attended the 9th and final conference of the Innovative Electronic Manufacturing Research Centre "IeMRC" at Loughborough University, UK.

IeMRC (and CDT-EI) Director Professor Paul Conway welcomed a full-house audience and reflected upon the 10-year history of the IeMRC, from its origins as one of the Manufacturing Research Centres set up and supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The final presentation of the day came from Professor Marc Desmulliez, Head of Sensors, Signals and Systems at Heriot Watt University and CDT-EI co-Director. Prfofessor Desmulliez discussed the design, simulation and test of a novel microwave applicator used to cure paste materials in microelectronics packaging in a paper entitled: “From curing to sensing using microwave energy: a journey across several manufacturing capability readiness levels.”

CDT-EI students were able to showcase their work by presenting posters during the breaks and networking sessions. Below are images of the posters prepared about the group projects undertaken during semester 1 with Renishaw (left) and Siemens (right).

Design for Digital Fabrication

A new research group has been formed at Loughborough Univeristy Design School. The 'Design for Digital Fabrication' group can offer expertise is a range of areas relevant to embedded intelligence such as

• Design of packaging, enclosures, test rigs and prototypes
• Concept design for applications and proof of concept demonstrators
• Design for Rapid prototyping, 3D Printing / Additive Manufacture
• Prototyping methods and prototype manufacture
• Design of wearables and custom fitting devices and products (inc. medical / rehab devices)

CDT-EI presents CONNECT: building industry-academia collaborations

Registration is now open for our information and networking session "CONNECT" event on Tuesday 17th February from 4pm to 6pm.

Opportunity to have Loughborough University researchers work on an engineering and product/service design project for your company

Our postgraduate students undertake a company-led design project each year. These are self-contained small R&D projects that are carried out for about 10-12 weeks and we are looking for projects to be worked on from mid-January to mid-March.

Working in teams of 3 or 4 our students liaise with companies as if they were their consultants and work closely with them to a set of milestones and deliverables. This is a good platform to test-drive some concepts that you might want to explore.

CDT in Embedded Intelligence research topic awarded best paper award at the International Conference IMPACT-EMAP in Taiwan

Dr. Giuseppe Schiavone, second from the left in the photograph, was awarded best paper award at the latest conference IMPACT-EMAP 2014 held in Tapei, Taiwan, on the 24th of October 2014. The conference is one of the most important events in Asia in the field of Microsystems, Electronic Materials and Packaging. The $3,000 cash price rewarded the work carried out by the team led by Prof. Desmulliez, Director the Microsystems Engineering Centre at Heriot-Watt University, for the development of an electroplating process for Galfenol, an alloy of Gallium and Iron, which has remarkable magnetostrictive properties. Only three research groups in the world have managed to electroplate such an alloy. Devices made of Galfenol offer interesting energy harvesting as well as communication properties. The work is to be continued through the Company Renishaw in the context of a fully funded PhD studentship under the CDT in Embedded Intelligence.

Dr Torres supports European student enterprise

Dr Carmen Torres has recently been elected as a member of Council of the European Confederation of Junior Enterprises (JADE), which is the largest young entrepreneurial network in Europe, and a think tank to the European Commission in Youth and Entrepreneurship.

There are only 5 Council members elected and Dr Torres is delighted to be given this privileged opportunity. Dr Torres has said “The tenure will be 2 years and I am looking forward to supporting them with strategic planning and inter-country relationships.” The network involves European Public Institutions, Universities and Private Sector Companies from more than 15 countries across Europe. CDT Director takes up new post

Congratulations are in order as our CDT Director, Professor Paul Conway, has recently been appointed as Acting Dean of the Wolfson School of School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University. Prof Conway started in role on 1st October and has said “it is a privilege for me to have this opportunity and responsibility. I look forward to working with all Wolfson staff and students in the next few months, an exciting transitional time for the School.”
